KING DAVID'S CRIME(SUMMARY)
King David’s Crime
King David’s Crime is a religious story
extracted/taken from the Holy bible. It
is a story about King David, his sins, attempts he made to cover those sins and
how his actions eventually displease God.
Moreover the story tries to impart a religious message that even for
weak and powerless people there is always a hope for justice from the almighty
God. King David in the story thinks that
he has managed to cover-up his hideous crime by planning the murder of Uriah
and marrying his wife Bathsheba. However, the almighty God is aware of his
crimes and is displeased with it. According to the holy Bible king David used
to be a pious and humble devotee of the Lord before he displeased the Lord with
various Sins. The Holy book also mentions that among all his sins, the Lord was
most displease with the murder of Uriah. As Holy Bible also tells us King David
was indeed punished for his crimes, therefore even for powerless people like
Uriah there is a hope that they will get their part of justice from the Lord
above.
After reading the story I became aware of the fact
that people with absolute authority don’t hesitate to abuse their authority.
Absolute power is a dangerous thing in a hand of a ruler who commits one crime
after another in order to fulfill his desire of lust and luxury. King David as
a ruler has absolute power over his people, besides he abuses that absolute
authority to seduce Bathsheba and plan and execute the murder of Uriah. In
other words he uses his absolute author not only to commit sin but also to
cover it up. The Biblical story tells us that King David saw from the roof of
his palace a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful to look upon. Hence he
gets attracted towards her. Further he sends his messengers to inquire about
the woman. It was reported to him that she is Bathsheba the wife of Uriah, a
soldier fighting for the king. Next, King David sends a messenger to get her,
and she came to him, and he slept with her. After she became pregnant and she
sends a message to King David that she is with his child.
Here rather than repenting and admitting his crime,
King David makes a plan to hide his sin by calling Uriah back from the battle
field and sending him back to his house so that he sleeps with his wife, making
the pregnancy of Bathsheba appear as his not as King David’s crime. Unlike King
David, Uriah refuses to pursue his own pleasure, rather concerned about his
fellow soldiers and his kingdom. As Uriah refuses to go back to his house and
sleep with his wife, King David makes another plan to get rid of him. He sends
a letter to Joab ordering him to set Uriah in the forefront of the battle line
so that he could get kill. After Uriah dies, King David marries his wife
Bathsheba and covers his crimes. But the thing that David had done in order to
hide his sins displeases God.
The story reminds us about that wonderful little
phrase that Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. In the story
King David abuses his absolute power not only to seduce and sleep with
Bathsheba and kill Uriah but also to escape for his duties and
responsibilities. Rather than leading his army in the Battle-field we find King
David living a life of luxury in his palace while his soldiers were fighting
and dying in the battle field.
